UnchartedWhile searching for the legendary El Dorado in a rain forest, adventurer Nathan Drake stumbles across an opening. Perched on the edge of a waterfall is an old, rusting German World War II U-boat. Totally out of place and unexpected.  Click the jump for the video.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed – Demo Impressions August 23, 2008

The Force UnleashedThe demo takes place in a Imperial shipyard which Darth Vader orders you to infiltrate in order to kill a Jedi, along with any Rebels and Imperials you may encounter. There is a tutorial available before you play the demo mission but since there are on-screen hints telling you the controls it is not exactly mandatory. Click the jump for my summary of the demo.

The level’s interior is familiar if you have seen a Star Wars film before, with the usual droids wandering around, minding their own business. If (like me) you fancy being a little sadistic then you can play around with them using your force powers. Three main force powers are available; push, grip and lightning. After a few corridor sections you are required to blast open the locked door with force push, which is the first time you get to see the games impressive physics in action as the door bends and is thrown open.

Through the door is a hangar with a crashed Imperial Shuttle. You walk in on a battle between some Rebels and Stromtroopers which I quickly dealt with using the various crates and debris scattered around me. The main door out of this hangar is opened using your force grip to slide the horizontal and vertical locks into place. After a few more corridor sections the area opens up into some sort of TIE Fighter docking station. There are metal beams that can be bent outwards, blowing up any TIEs that fly past. After battling more Stormtroopers and Rebels here it leads on to a boss fight with an AT-ST. The objective here is to wear down its health enough using a combination of your lightsaber, force powers and whatever loose objects are at your disposal. Once you have dealt enough damage you then activate your finishing move via a quick-time event which results in the AT-ST being sliced vertically in half and here ends the demo with a little teaser trailer for the main game.

Most Star Wars tie-ins are hit-and-miss but I’ve had high hopes for this one ever since I witnessed the first trailer, and I’m a massive Star Wars fan. The combat in this can be described as “Jedi Knight-lite”. Since, unlike Jedi Knight, this is aimed solely at the console market combat has been toned down so it is a basic hack& slash. But its a Star Wars game so things aren’t that simple. With upgradable force powers and the amount of combat options these abilities give you, combat wont get boring too quickly. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is out on September 19th for everything apart from the PC and is definitely a day one purchase for me.

Anju & KafeiAnju & Kafei are due to get married until Kafei is unfortunately turned into a child by the Majora’s Mask-posessed Skull-Kid. Cue one of the biggest side-quests in the game which results in one of the most heartwarming reunions you will ever see.

Reflecting back on Super Smash Bros. Brawl August 23, 2008

Super Smash Bros. BrawlThe ridiculous delay between its release in Japan and Europe is forgiven. This game is quite simply one of the funnest (is that even a word?) multiplayer games of all time. The online multiplayer was also a great addition, despite the Wii’s shoddy and awkward online system. The cutscenes from the Subspace Emissary are some of the best I’ve seen in ages. So many memorable moments. Then there are the various assist trophies which are one of my favourite features of the game. Check out my review for it at Peoww.

Overkill
Sega have announced House of the Dead: Overkill. Here is the fantastic, Grindhouse-esque trailer:

Looks excellent. Click the jump for some more info.

The House of the Dead: OVERKILL uncovers the ugly, terrifying, red hot secrets behind the House of the Dead; the daddy of all over-the-top shooters. While staying true to the classic gameplay this hugely successful SEGA series is getting a new retro look, with distinctive graphics, sound and attitude that will add to its horror cool status. Plus, thanks to the Wii Remote™, players will fight off zombies when they get too close; pistol-whipping jaws off and smashing in skulls with their shotgun butt.

“We wanted to do something really different with The House of the Dead: OVERKILL,” commented Bradley Crooks, Studio Head at Headstrong Games. “With SEGA we’ve been able to create a fresh look for the franchise. I think you’ll agree it’s like nothing you’ve seen before on Wii.”

“Paying homage to the pulp horror comics and films that inspired generations of gore fans, The House of the Dead: OVERKILL will expose gamers to a brand-new fleshy rollercoaster ride of revolting dismemberment,” commented Gary Knight, European Marketing Director at SEGA Europe. “This is the hardcore Wii title you’ve been waiting for.”

The House of the Dead: OVERKILL takes you back to when Special Agent G was fresh out of the academy. Teamed up with hard-boiled bad-ass Detective Washington, they are sent to investigate stories of mysterious disappearances in small-town Louisiana. Little do they know what blood-soaked mutant depravity awaits them in the streets and swamps of Bayou City…

The House of the Dead: OVERKILL will be released in early 2009, exclusively for Nintendo Wii. For more information about the game, please visit www.houseofthedeadoverkill.com.

Overkill box artSounds like a prequel. I’ve never really been a fan of the HotD series but I’m looking forward to this.

Legendary Intros #8: WCW/nWo Revenge August 18, 2008

Despite being a total WWF fanboy at the time, this game basically shat all over Acclaim’s WWF Warzone so I was ecstatic when THQ were given the WWF license. This and WCW World Tour before it set the foundations for WWF Wrestlemania 2000 and WWF No Mercy – which is still the best wrestling game of all time in my opinion.

Battlefield: Bad Company – Things That Need Fixed (NOW) August 17, 2008

Bad CompanyDespite the fact that BF:BC is currently above Halo 3 and COD4 in my most-played online game, there is so much needing fixed its not even funny:

  • This has been said by many people before but the 4-men-to-a-squad system is poor. Let me talk to the whole team rather than just the three members of my squad, even if it means something like push-to-talk e.g. Halo 3.
  • Barring the hand grenades the power and splash damage of the explosives is pathetic. If I fire a rocket at someone and it lands a few feet nearby I expect it to kill them. Don’t even get me started on the helicopter missiles.
  • Sniper rifles are massively underpowered- especially the M95. A headshot with this should be a one hit kill, not just cause the target to flinch and brush it off. It is powerful enough to destroy trees but not opponents?
  • New Conquest maps please, rather than altered Gold Rush ones.
  • Sniping glitches ever since the most recent update. Sometimes when I move while zoomed in, the crosshair moves but the actual scope doesn’t. Also, as you can see in the picture above, my arm becomes randomly detached and hovers in mid air(!)

That is all.

Mega Man Energy DrinkWhat better way to build up the imminent release of Mega Man 9 than an energy drink? Rockman E-Tank Sports Drink is obviously Japan only for the sum of ¥137 – that’s around 70p in proper money.
